Asterisk: optimizing a2billing mysql database with more than 1,000,000 rates in cc_ratecard Imprimer

UPDATE: Areski Belaid, from a2billing, has just let us know that the index we are talking about will be added to the next a2billing release. We have been told that the index is already part of the source repository now as of rev 2419.

Like many other people, we have experienced performance problems with a2billing ( asterisk2billing ) when our cc_ratecard table reached 1,000,000 rows.

We have surfed around the internet to find solutions to fix this problem. We found several solutions, some suggesting to split the cc_ratecard table into multiple tables in order to fix things. Nevertehless, we figured that there must be another way and there was indeed another way. Click below to read more...

Asterisk chroot - Asterisk server running in a chroot jail; not as secure as virtualization but here it is. (Asterisk 1.4.18 and Linux 2.6.24) Imprimer
Écrit par Alain Côté

I finally gave up, I admit it, it was silly to try to run Asterisk reliably in a VmWare virtual machine, just as my co-workers kept on telling me. I was going to force us to get into Xen and other popular virtualization techniques just to prove that Asterisk should run perfectly in a virtual machines. I still believe that it should, but I completely give up on trying to demonstrate it ;-)

Choppy IVR sounds problem solved on asterisk 1.4.17 on VmWare server 1.4 (a la trixbox) with HP Pavilion a1450n computer (nvidia chip set) Imprimer

Update 2010-03-16: We have tested Asterisk with VMware server 2.X and clock issues seems to be resolved when simply installing with out of the box configuration. So there seems to be no more choppy IVR sound issues while using VMware server 2.0. We recommand that you give it a try and come back here to post your findings, thanks in advance ;-)

The rest of this article covers our experience when we were using VMware server 1.X, it is left here only for reference and documentation purposes.

Receiving and sending faxes with asterisk 1.4, NVFaxDetect, iaxmodem and hylafax Imprimer

UPDATE: Changes to mutex usage in Asterisk 1.4.23 cause NVFax to cease to compile properly, see below for updated files that compile with 1.4.23.1

We have bridged our HylaFax server with our Asterisk server in order to be able to send and receive faxes over VOIP phone lines and to eliminate dedicated PSTN phone lines hooked up directly to modems on our HylaFax server. A lot of documentation floating around on the internet states that VOIP phone lines are not really suited to send/receive faxes. We have found out that it mostly depend on the providers you are using and on your network connectivity quality.

Asterisk - Intermittent beep with linksys SPA 3102, PAP2, DTMF sounds heard during conversation Imprimer

We had users reporting hearing DTMF sounds during a conversation. We have solved the problem by switching DTMF mode to INBAND in the SPA 3102 config, in the PAP2 config and into Asterisk/FreePBX configuration.

Having a2billing and Asterisk apply different rates depending on the incoming line for the call. Imprimer

In typical calling card applications, it is standard to charge a different rate if the user dials in through an 1-800 line to get to the calling card system. We have looked all over the net for ways to do this with a2billing and we did not find any ready to go solutions, only hints on how to implement one. So here is how we did it.
