Some older file formats (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Corel Draw) aren't supported anymore after installing Windows Office service pack 3. Microsoft apparently did this because those older file formats are insecure.
This could have a perverse effect for customers unaware of that fact, especially because older file formats might be more likely on backups or archives folders that you keep around just in case you need them. So, it is highly possible that a user would encounter the first symptoms long after he installed Office service pack 3, e.g. he will only face the problem the first time he tries to open an older file format. Microsoft does provide a way to re-enable the older file formats but it isn't user friendly at all. The user wanting to re-enable older file format will have to play around with Windows registries.
